bewin – After Australia’s humiliating defeat against India in the recent Border – Gavaskar series, serious doubts about Ricky Ponting’s captaincy have arisen. More to the point is Australia’s coveted world number 1 spot under threat from the very team who so comprehensively beat them in the recent series?

Ricky has been surrounded by controversy recently from back home after he elected to bowl part time bowlers on day four of the final test match which Australia needed to win to draw the series and to retain the trophy. Was Ricky looking after himself or the team?
Or is it more to the point that Australia hasn’t replaced the giant greats of the sport in Glen McGrath and Shane Warne? Australia have looked like a second string side recently and the inclusion of spinner Krejza in the last test didn’t really improve matters either.
Indian pitches are renowned for spin so why did Ricky wait until the last match in the series to introduce Jason Krejza, Yes he may have been wacked all over the park in the warm up matches but his bowling in the final test showed he can spin the ball all though he may have been quite expensive in the runs department. To take eight Indian wickets in the first innings is a mean feat that shouldn’t be overlooked although the Indians attacked the new man from the off.
Ricky Ponting and Australia are under serious pressure and the eagerly awaited series against New Zealand could be the making or breaking of Ricky. With the New Zealanders eager to further increase the pressure on Ricky, this test series couldn’t have come at a more daunting time for the Australian cricket team.
